Jennifer Ruhl Kubilus began her dance training in the New Jersey, New York City and Philadelphia areas. She grew up dancing at competition studios, where she won many high score awards, and supplemented her training at ballet schools, Broadway Dance Center and Steps. Jenn was also a competitive gymnast and springboard diver.
In 2007, she graduated magna cum laude with a BFA in Dance from George Mason University, and a Minor in Arts Administration. She received a partial scholarship and many dance and academic awards. Her training included Modern/Contemporary, Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Teaching Methods, Dance History, Alignment and Laban, Choreography and Composition, Concert Production, Music and working with Live Accompanists, Writing in Dance, Arts Management, and other dance related concentrations.
She both performed and choreographed with the George Mason University Dance Company and her piece Organized Chaos represented GMU at the 2007 American College Dance Festival at Radford University. As part of the resident artist program, she performed in the works of Kevin Campbell, Danny Ezralow of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Susan Marshall, Kate Skarpetowska, Lar Lubovitch, Paul Taylor and in the work of professor Elizabeth Price.
At GMU, she studied with guest artists, and professors who were former dancers in the prestigious companies of Mikhail Baryshnikov, Laura Dean, Alonzo King, José Limón, Lar Lubovitch, Mark Morris, Paul Taylor, Doug Varone, multiple ballet companies, and many other internationally touring companies.
Jenn is a certified dance teacher and member through Dance Masters of America in acro, ballet, jazz and modern, a certified member instructor of USA Gymnastics, a licensed Zumba® instructor, and Red Cross certified in First Aid/CPR/AED.
She has taught at George Mason University’s School of Dance as an Adjunct Instructor, Northern Virginia Community College, numerous studios, outreach programs, dance companies and organizations, the dance departments of Fairfax County Public Schools, and as a Master Class and Workshop teacher.
In Musical Theater, she has choreographed productions of Chicago, A Chorus Line, Fiddler on the Roof, Little Shop of Horrors, Romeo and Juliet and The Wiz.
Jenn worked professionally as a dancer, choreographer, and Managing Director/Concert Producer in Mayzsoul, dancer, Rehearsal Director and Assistant Director for Beth Elliott Dance Group, and as a dancer with Momentum Dance Theatre, Nomadic Artist and other dance companies and projects. She has produced, performed and presented choreography for professional concerts in NoVA, NYC and DC, including the Kennedy Center, and at Dance and Choreography Festivals. Her choreography has received numerous awards, technique awards, overall high scores at dance competitions, title winners, Industry Dance Awards nominations and an ADCC Studio of Excellence Award.
In 2014, she founded J. Dance Kollective as a pre-professional company to share her artistry and technique to help dancers reach their full potential. It expanded to a recreational and competitive dance program, located at the historical Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA. Jenn now operates JDK as a freelance company, choreographing and teaching at studios, master classes, and workshops, both at the pre-professional and professional level. Her choreography and dance education fortes include contemporary, lyrical, modern and cirque acro/contortion. She also specializes in teaching alignment, contemporary/acrobatic partnering, dance composition, floor work, injury prevention, improvisation, leaps/jumps and turns, strength/stretch/conditioning, and other technique styles. Always continuing her training, she attends national dance conventions, dance teacher summits, and dance education workshops.
